D-Train Configurations: Tractor, Dumps and Flat Decks
All of the above vehicles are equipped with a patented d-TRAiN 5th Wheel Compound Hitch system. There are two basic categories, that of a Straight Truck or Work Truck and a Tractor used for pulling a Semi-trailer. Other than wheelbase, both categories are equipped as tractors and use a sliding 5th wheel with extended after-frame. In the above photo of a “RED” KW tractor, the 5th wheel is shown moving from the rear position to the operating position ahead. (There is only one 5th wheel) An air/vacuum line kit and (7) wire cable is necessary as is a Wet-line kit for hydraulics such as a dump truck and with all Straight truck configurations and with ancillary equipment ie; dump trailer. Flat Decks, Van bodies, Garbage packer, Salt spreader etc. a tractor package is required. All attachments require a kingpin, landing gear and rear axle for load baring weight distribution and to be self supporting when dis-mounted.

CO Extended length 73′ Semi-trailer

ACCORD-Stinger Semi-trailer
All semi-trailers are generally equipped with a kingpin used for pulling the trailer. The patented d-TRAiN 5th Wheel Compound Hitch eliminates articulation at the tractor and transfers this movement to the “Stinger” on the trailer. Removing the articulation from the tractor 5th wheel allows the semi-trailer to be substantially extended, (Approx 10.5′) closing “GAP” to (.5′) reducing wind turbulence with Approx. 422 gallons fuel saved. A glove assembly is installed on the trailer and between the dolly jacks to receive the tractor chassis after-frame and compound hitch. This method limits yaw angle of the tractor transferring turning forces to the “Stinger” location. The result is a safer rig and a 50% improved maneuverability. Full Jackknife is eliminated, the trailer never travels more than 52° (No impact of tractor cab) sufficient to meet all requirements.
There are five (5) main objectives;
- To eliminate yaw articulation at the tractor
- To move articulation to the stinger located on the trailer
- To eliminate a full jackknife
- To improve cubic capacity 20%
- To improve maneuverability 50%
- To reduce trailer forward length 19%
- To save fuel by reducing “GAP” turbulence (TC est. 422 gals (1566 ltr) per tractor/yr
As an industry faced with capacity issues 2021, driver shortages, GHG Emission costs the d-TRAiN hitch system will improve performance of both tractor, semi-trailer and driver safety. A fast payback Approx. one year, Tractor inter-changeability non-disruptive technology with minor modifications.
Where the rubber meets the road is still an important maxim for tractor trailer operators and designers and tractor directional stability s paramount. The ACCORD compound hitch is mechanical design with stops at 52º offers improved stability on low friction surfaces under powered or braking jackknife and or inadvertent instability. Roll-over is further constrained as a fundamental priinciple of this particular design.
